Lindsey Graham’s Nepo Sis Bombs Taiwan Question, Then Has A Bizarre Excuse

Darline Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump’s pick to temporarily succeed him, is trying to explain away a disastrous debate performance after getting booed for admitting she wasn’t well-versed in national security.

During Tuesday’s Republican Senate runoff debate in South Carolina, Graham was asked whether tensions involving Taiwan and the South China Sea posed a national security concern for the United States. Seems like an easy enough question to answer, right? Apparently not.

After asking the moderator to repeat the question, she eventually acknowledged that national security wasn’t her area of expertise and said she supported the military instead. The audience met the response with jeers.

The stumble became an even bigger problem because Graham is running for a full six-year Senate term, where foreign policy and national security would inevitably be part of the job. Her opponent, Rep. Ralph Norman, is competing against her in next Tuesday’s Republican runoff.

The following evening, Graham appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program in an effort to explain what happened. Rather than saying she needed to know more about the subject, she portrayed the incident as an example of her refreshing honesty.

Graham said she had merely “tripped up” on the Taiwan question and emphasized that she isn’t a career politician. She argued that she “doesn’t speak politician” and suggested voters appreciated her willingness to admit when she didn’t know something rather than pretending otherwise.

She also said that, after talking with people around South Carolina, she believed voters were more concerned about issues such as the economy, transgender participation in sports, gun rights, immigration and the proposed Save America Act than they were about Taiwan. It sure sounds like she got those bullet points from Trump, doesn’t it?

Graham nevertheless insisted she understood the broader threat posed by China, describing the country as an enemy and a military and economic threat to the United States. She also said Taiwan is a U.S. friend.

Hannity tried to bolster Graham’s credentials by pointing out that her late brother had dedicated years immersed in foreign-policy and national-security issues. He suggested that, given the time she had spent around Lindsey Graham, she presumably had absorbed plenty of knowledge about international affairs, including the Middle East, Europe and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Graham responded by saying national security was important to her and praised Trump as a “wonderful” commander in chief. She said she comprehended the seriousness of issues involving Israel and Iran.

But she quickly shifted back toward domestic politics, criticizing Norman over Social Security and immigration.

The Fox appearance came after what had already become an embarrassing moment on the debate stage. Graham’s admission that national security wasn’t her specialty drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly called the answer “disqualifying” and said she was embarrassed by Graham’s performance.

Trump, who endorsed Graham, is scheduled to campaign alongside her at a rally in Myrtle Beach on Friday as she heads into the Republican runoff.

In other words, Graham’s defense appears to be: Yes, I didn’t know the answer—but at least I was honest about not knowing it.

When rent keeps going up, cost of food keeps going up, our troops are trying to jump off boats because of bad condition, everything is going through enshittification…but hey, the transgenders are the real problem in America https://t.co/nAB3XAryLR
