Sen. Susan Collins has sold herself as a Republican moderate for decades in Maine, but during the first Senate debate between Collins and Democratic candidate Troy Jackson, Collins made herself look like a DC insider incumbent.

Collins tried to blame high energy prices on the state of Maine:
Maine families are struggling, and that’s why I’ve been working so hard to lower energy costs, to decrease the costs of prescription drugs by putting a $35 a month cap on the cost of insulin, and speed the approval of lower cost generic drugs. And I have worked consistently to try to make housing more affordable.
If you look at the policies that have driven up the cost of living in Maine, you have to look at Augusta. Maine has the fourth highest electricity rates in the country. It has some of the highest housing costs in the entire country. It has extraordinarily high property taxes. Those are all due to Augusta’s failed policies under the failed leadership of Troy Jackson.

Troy Jackson rebutted Collins:
I think it’s pretty clear that what we’re seeing right now with affordability issues is, because of Senator Collins not being willing to stand up to Donald Trump, voting with him 96% of the time.
She advanced the big bad bill out of committee. Her colleagues call her a team player. That bill right there cost $3 billion the state of Maine. It’s cutting SNAP benefits, it’s cutting heating benefits. A- and why? So that she could give her billionaire funders another tax break.
That’s why that bill is crucifying Maine. Also, Iran war. Senator Collins would not push back against that. Five times she voted for it. The reason why our fuel price is going through the roof and the way our… the reason why our electricity costs are going through the roof is because of the cost of fuel.
Cost of oil is so high because she wouldn’t stop President Trump with the Iran war. Tariffs, another thing that, as a chair of appropriations, she could have done more to stop, but now we have prices all across the state, fuel prices, wood going to Canada, everything that we’re buying tourism, all because of the tariffs.
Collins kept trying to run away from Trump, and Jackson kept linking her to the president. The worst moment for Collins came when she was asked about her Brett Kavanaugh vote.
